Centered in the Texas panhandle where buffalo once roamed, Lubbock thrives as a city of more than 200,000 and home of Texas Tech University. Lubbock, named for rancher Tom S. Lubbock, a Confederate officer and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, understandably ranks as a commercial hub for ranching. Greater Lubbock also has come a long way in farming, producing four bales of cotton in 1902, 100,000 in 1932, and now some two million annually. On a cultural front, Lubbock supports the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra, ballet, and theatre, as well as the popular music industry. Known as the 'Music Crossroads of West Texas,' with the late Buddy 'That'll Be The Day' Holly as a native son, other icons like Roy Orbison, Waylon Jennings, Jimmy Dean and Tanya Tucker have found comfort and inspiration in Lubbock. Neon lights of the Depot Entertainment District glimmer by night as live music fills the air at numerous bars and dance clubs. Award-winning wineries provide ample opportunity for tastings, and restaurants are plentiful with cuisine from ethnic to Tex-Mex. Attractions include both the Buddy Holly Center and the Buddy Holly Statue & Walk of Fame, the Museum of Texas Tech University, the National Ranching Center, and the American Museum of Agriculture.
